What Is A Body Lift?
A body
lift, also called a belt lipectomy or an circumferential
panniculectomy, is the procedure to excise skin around the entire
waist and back after natural weight loss, or for sagging skin after liposuction of a
patient with inelastic skin. This procedure often combines an
abdominoplasty and buttocks lift, together, to lift the lower half
of the torso. Having
a body lift may also include a medial thigh lift (inside of the
thigh) as well. Although, usually this is a separate procedure, and
a separate fee.
Full rejuvenation
of the body may include a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), a buttocks
lift, a medial thigh lift, a breast lift (mastopexy) and an arm
lift (brachioplasty). Having all of these at once is
possible although this depends upon the surgeon and your level of
health.
Are You A Candidate For A Body Lift?
If you have
inelastic skin and have lost a great deal of weight or will be
having a large volume liposuction and your surgeon does not feel
your skin will bounce back and tighten up after surgery, you may
benefit from a body lift procedure. Having realistic
expectations, no no active diseases or disorders which may inhibit proper
healing, and being emotionally stable are also
requirements for having plastic surgery. Only a qualified
medical professional can ascertain your candidacy after a thorough
consultation and physical examination.
At Your Body Lift Consultation
You should have at least 3 consultations
to adequately make an informed choice. Although there are a
great many surgeons out there, not every surgeon will mesh with
every patient. While a friendship isn't the goal, a working
relationship with mutual respect is important.
You will meet with these surgeons
and discuss all of the options, the risks and complications, what
to expect postoperatively, and possibly have computer
imaging. It is important to view before and after photos to
get an idea of the surgeon's skill and the reality of the
scars. While a good surgeon attempts to place the incisions
where it may be better covered by normal clothing, scars are
unavoidable.
You may also discuss costs,
however, this is discussed many times with a financial planner
after your consultation. You may receive a quote that may
have limitations on the length of time the price is guaranteed
for. Be sure to ask about revision policies as it may be necessary
to have touch up procedures. Plastic surgery isn't like making
a suit of clothing, it involves skin, not fabric and all skin can
heal differently.
Preparing Your Body For Surgery
It is very important to be
at your optimal health before and after a surgery. This means quitting
smoking, if applicable, well beforehand. This also include
a good diet, good hydration, cessation of certain medications (be
sure to discuss this all with your surgeon and anesthesiologist).
Although you will be nervous beforehand, try to lessen your stress load.
Prepare your surrounding as well. When you are prepared you
are better able to handle anything that may come up.
How A Body Lift Is Performed
After you are fully
anesthetized and your vitals are stable, your surgeon will begin
injecting you with a local pain reliever, such a lidocaine, and a
substance called epinephrine at the areas of your incisions, some times
in areas of dissection. The lidocaine provides pain relief
and the epinephrine assists in narrowing the size of your blood
vessels in the immediate area so that you bleed less, and also to
lessen the absorption of the lidocaine. The decrease in absorption
allows for longer lasting pain relief and less chances of any type
of lidocaine
