Strong word of advice, if you do not know how to really color your hair professionally, go to a professional. Even when I had professional products I still accidentally coated the already lightened hair-shaft a few too many times near the new growth and fried my hair. I have been lightening my hair since I my teens. I have tried just about every product out there, professional or store-bought and if I am not careful I can fry it quite easily. I now go to a really good color specialist.

Adding darker color is less damaging than stripping color. Non-ammonia coloring products are better for your hair than those which do contain harsh chemicals. Honestly, I suggest going to a professional having learned the hard way may times. I know it is expensive but trust me, it is far more expensive to get extensions.
